Intravenous Vitamin C as A Cancer Treatment Update – An Interview with Jeanne Drisko, M.D.

Jeanne Drisko, MD and Program Director for Integrative Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center discusses new findings for the positive role of high dose intravenous vitamin C as an adjunctive cancer treatment along with conventional therapy.

Highlights:
– Vitamin C intravenously in high dose works as a pro-oxidant in the extracellular space between cells increasing hydrogen peroxide production after reactions with transition metals (i.e. iron, copper, etc.). The oxygen burst from the hydrogen peroxide kills or reduces the metabolism of cancer cells which flourish in an acidic, anaerobic (no oxygen) environment.
– Intravenous vitamin C is given over 1-3 hours at a dose between 25-125 grams of vitamin C with only magnesium as the other ingredient to improve vein relaxation and comfort during the infusion.
– Vitamin C intravenously can be given on the same day as chemotherapy in most cases and is synergistic with the chemotherapy.
– Vitamin C is not given on the same days as radiation therapy because it could potentiate the “burn” side effects of the radiation. Vitamin C can be given before or after the series of radiation therapy.
– Dr. Drisko is working with clinicians around the country/world as well as academic centers in the United States and researchers at the National Institutes of Health on the use of intravenous vitamin C in the treatment of cancer.
