Heart Health, Death and Testosterone Replacement

In studying more than 83,000 veterans with low testosterone levels those who replaced testosterone to “normal levels” compared to those who did no replacement resulted in a 56% reduction in risk of totally mortality (death); 24% reductionin heart attacks and a 36% reduction in stroke.

My personal approach is not to replace testosterone right away but to challenge the patients to reduce their weight,  cardiovascular  risk factors (weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.) and then see where there testosterone level is and how they feel, then consider replacement. Many physicians will replace testosterone immediately to help improve the above mentioned risk factors. Sometimes patients don’t realize that going on testosterone is usually a lifelong commitment which also means you need a medical practitioner to monitor and prescribe testosterone.

“Normalization of testosterone level is associated wither reduced incidence of myocardial infarction and mortality in men.” Eur Heart Journal, 2015 Aug 6. pii. 2013
