Can Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) Reverse Coronary Atherosclerosis? – An Interview with Matthew Budoff, MD

Can Aged Garlic Extract Reverse Coronary Atherosclerosis? (18:22)
Kirk’s YouTube Overview of his Interview with Dr. Matthew Budoff (2:47)

Dr. Budoff’s group showed in this study that aged garlic extract (AGE) over a 1 year period reversed soft plaque, the most dangerous type of plaque that can rupture and clot someplace in the body (i.e. brain, heart, lungs, legs, etc.) causing a serious cardiac event. There were minimal side effects from AGE and good compliance.

The CT angiogram is a relatively non-invasive test (an IV is used to inject dye in the vein), covered by many health insurances, done over 20-30 minutes, which allows the physician to see both the hard and soft plaque in the coronary arteries and devise an appropriate preventive strategy.

Dr. Budoff believes in moderate diets, such as the Mediterranean Diet and South Beach Diet, as part of a lifelong commitment to treating cardiovascular disease.

He does believe in lowering LDL cholesterol to less than 100 and in those with serious coronary artery disease to less than 70 mg/dl. Diet and red rice yeast are the therapies of choice to lower cholesterol.

Three nutrients that he recommends to many of his coronary artery disease patients are – Coenzyme Q10, fish oil (triglycerides) and Age Garlic Extract (Kyolic.com).

Patients with metabolic syndrome mean age of 58.7 years took 2400 mg aged garlic extract (AGE) orally (1200 mg two times daily). Cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) was done at baseline and at follow-up in 354 days. The %LAP (low-attenuation plaque) change was significantly reduced in the AGE group. There was no difference in %TPV (total plaque volume), % NCP (noncalcified plaque) change, and % DC (dense calcium) change) compared to placebo. There was found a beneficial effect of AGE on %LAP regression in this study.  “Aged Garlic Extract Reduces Low Attenuation Plaque in Coronary Arteries of Patients with Metabolic Syndrome in a Prospective Randomized Double-Blind Study.” J Nutr. 2016 Feb;146(2):427S-32S. 51203 Matthew J Budoff, MD, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, CA mbudoff@labiomed.org

Dr. Matthew Budoff graduated cum laude with distinction from the University of California, Riverside, with a major in biochemistry and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha from the George Washington University School of Medicine, in Washington, DC. He returned to his native California and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in cardiology, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. He is currently a Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Program Director for Cardiology Fellowship and Director of Cardiac Computed Tomography, Division of Cardiology, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center; and Endowed Chair of Preventive Cardiology, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute.
