Can Vitamin D Reduce Breast Cancer Risk in Menopausal Hormone Users?

CONCLUSION: In more than 57,000 postmenopausal women since 1990 current, but not past vitamin D supplementation was associated with a 26 % decrease in postmenopausal breast cancer risk in menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) users; there was no association in MHT nonusers. Estrogens are known to have a rapid proliferative stimulus on estrogen receptor positive breast tumors. Experimental studies suggest that vitamin D may reduce the proliferative stimulus of estrogens on ER+ tumors.  This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the decreased breast cancer risk in MHT users was restricted to current vitamin D supplementation. “Interaction between current vitamin D supplementation and menopausal hormone therapy use on breast cancer risk: evidence from the E3N cohort.” Am J Clin Nutr. 2015 Oct;102(4):966-73. Dr. Marie-Christine Boutron-Ruault, MD, PhD, Centre de Recherche en Épidémiologie et Santé des Populations, U1018, INSERM, UPS, UVSQ, Gustave Roussy, 114, rue Edouard Vaillant 94805 Villejuif cedex, Tel : + 33 1 42 11 64 66 / +33 1 42 11 40 00 (FAX) marie-christine.boutron@gustaveroussy.fr
